China’s High Blood Pressure Epidemic

high blood pressure

According to a recent market study conducted in China, over a third of Chinese adults are now suffering from high blood pressure. To make matters worse, only 5% of those affected, one in 20  of these adults, are able to manage their condition.

High blood pressure that goes uncontrolled is a significant risk factor for stroke. It’s become the leading cause of death in China, accounting for 20% all deaths annually. Today in China, fewer than 25% of adults with hypertension take medication and receive treatment. The study further finds that among those who do receive medication or treatment for high blood pressure,  it is often ineffective or unsuitable.

Research indicates that blood pressure levels in China are increasing, likely because of an ageing population, urbanisation, dietary changes and obesity. In this study, about 1.7 million people aged 35-75 were screened in all 31 provinces in mainland China as part of the research, and an initiative to improve cardiovascular disease risk factors in China.

Anti-hypertensive treatments and medications at more than 3,300 primary healthcare sites were also analysed as part of the China Patient-Centred Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events (PEACE) Million Persons Project.
